Hi,
I was aiming to minimize drama and confusion, but the draft floating around 4chan/fb ruined that. My goal was for the notice to quietly appear in the changelog for all people with VM installed at the same time so that they could check for themselves without having to dispute things on 4chan or reddit.
I became certain Cygames would amp up rules enforcement over the past couple months, which is why multiple recent versions have changed features to only appear on mouse-over. As it turns out my suspicions were correct but my guesses were wrong about what they would do next. The "update note" leaked to 4ch and facebook by a person I won't name is an early draft of the message I began preparing a while ago, which is why there's an old changelog timestamp above it in the leak and it is an incomplete version of the message.
Unfortunately once the leak occurred I had to rush out a working version of .3.28.1 because I had multiple important bug fixes in the works at the time. This version of Viramate is not sabotaged or backdoored in any way and the JS remains unobfuscated but I'm sure that some people will choose to use old versions or CRXs as a result of the leak. You will note some features are removed - they are either old features that I considered a safety risk or experimental/debugging mechanisms that are no longer needed as the extension is no longer being maintained.
VM users have no doubt noticed that the frequency of extension updates was slower as of late (for multiple reasons) so it should be no surprise that once I received a strongly worded notice from a company with well-paid lawyers I decided to just suspend development. I would have normally done this slowly but a few things forced me to basically slap the deploy button on the version of .3.28.1 I had ready and put the current draft of the message message in before I ran out of time. (Time expired quickly, as it turns out). Nothing was finalized until basically the moment I disabled the chrome store page and download link on the website.
As far as the usual questions go, my policy/stance on everything basically remains the same and I'll hit the common ones here.
Viramate and other extensions have been against the Terms of Service for a long time (though it was not when I started playing). Many other things players actively do are potentially against the Terms of Service as written. I do not advise doing anything that is against the Terms of Service but only Cygames can tell you which specific things are allowed.
How you play a game is up to you, and you should avoid doing things that make the game worse for other people. You should also avoid making the game worse for yourself by doing stupid shit in broad daylight.
To restate again because people ask about it all the time for some reason: yes, Viramate is bannable. Viramate has always been bannable. Cygames can ban you for any reason they want. This is true for the Terms of Service in virtually all modern video games.
The copyright for everything in Viramate remains held by the authors (mostly me, plus some third parties). As such it's not okay to publicly redistribute it (as-is or modified). That's always been true and won't change in the future.
One of my old comments on anticheat, hotkeys, and other issues may be of use here, as it remains accurate as originally written.
P.S. If you're upset about not having access to hotkeys for much longer, maybe put your spark funds to some other use, like donating to the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project.
P.P.S. It turns out the DMCA from last year *was* Cygames, and I had no way to know because they filled out the form incorrectly and never communicated with me. 🤷♀️ |
