And with the sequel about to finally reach audiences, Villeneuve is already hard at work on a third Dune film, noting that he’s currently in the writing process.
“I agreed to make Part One and Part Two back to back and now I think I will need to digest this experience and I want to come back with a strong screenplay,” he explained. “It’s almost done but it needs work, a bit, now.”

——Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah picks up 12 years after the events of Dune, which you split in half. Is that partially why you’re in no hurry to finish a trilogy? Do you want the actors to age?

It’s not that. I just finished Part Two very recently, and I went from Part One to Part Two without even an hour in between. I’m not complaining. I feel blessed to work, of course, but it’s just that I physically need to recover for a couple of weeks. It’s also about making sure that I have the right screenplay.

I have four projects on the table, currently. One of them is a secret project that I cannot talk about right now, but that needs to see the light of day quite quickly. So it would be a good idea to do something in between projects, before tackling Dune Messiah and Cleopatra. All these projects are still being written, so we’ll see where they go, but I have no control over that.

我们对话《沙丘2》导演丹尼斯·维伦纽瓦，问：即使不考虑一切现实因素，你现在最想拍成电影的小说/原作是什么？
维伦纽瓦：我最想拍的就是《与罗摩相会》，想到就“非常非常激动”！
我：我们都等着呢，希望在两年内看到这部电影。
维伦纽瓦：尽量。

维伦纽瓦是真的要拍《与罗摩相会》电影，但该项目宣布已久，到底何时投入制作则一直不明。《沙丘2》之后，维伦纽瓦已经暗示即使有《沙丘3》，也不会很快拍——他现在手上有四个别的项目，应该会先做别的。

不过我问他：已经确认下一部要拍的就是《与罗摩相会》吗？维伦纽瓦说还没板上钉钉，毕竟现在刚要结束《沙丘2》宣传期，等这一波过去，他会回到乡下的家里，写一写剧本，找一找灵感，再来正式确定新片。
