Employee question: I hear that we closed our Microsoft Research lab in Silicon Valley. Could you describe the rationale for that decision?
Nadella: It was a function of consolidating our West Coast operations. As a result, we had to make some hard calls, and therefore part with some very good people who have had great contributions not only at Microsoft but the industry at large.
Overall, I'm very, very bullish about our prospects with Microsoft Research. Take something like Cortana: Microsoft Research had a role to play. But is it sufficient? No. Because we are just scratching the surface of what it means to have impact in the mainstream of our products. Some of the moon shots like Skype Translator where we can actually challenge ourselves and solve, perhaps, one of the most longstanding human problems of language, that's a pretty amazing moon shot.
I want us to do fundamental research, which I think we are the last industrial lab of the ilk of Bell or Xerox PARC. But at the same time, we're also going to have these advanced technology teams that are going to have more mainstream impact in our products.
